Map the organics receival to product value stream
You are the organics team leader at the Windsor facility.
What has happened
Lead time from receival of organics to release of finished compost at Windsor has grown from eight weeks to eleven, and the maturation pad is full. Product testing results take up to ten days to come back and batches wait for release. Screening is done in campaigns when the screen is free from the mulch line. Bronwyn Tate believes the constraint is the screen but the crew think it is the testing turnaround. Before a capital request for more pad space, she wants the value stream mapped with the crew from receival to release, the waiting and the constraint identified from data in the loads register and the sample register, and a target state with actions on the A3 template.
Deliverables
- Current state value stream map with data
- Constraint analysis
- Completed A3 with root cause and target state
- Improvement register entries with owners and dates
Documents to use
Systems to use
Continuous Improvement Register
Tracks improvement actions from every site and program with owner, due date, status and measured benefit.
Inbound Loads and Contamination Register
Records every inbound load with customer, material, weights, contamination and outcome for both processing sites.
Environmental Sample and Monitoring Register
Tracks every field sample, windrow temperature record and monitoring result from collection to reported result and compliance check.

Evidence guide
Look for a current state map built from observation and register data rather than assumption, waiting times quantified, the constraint identified by comparing capacity with demand and the two hypotheses tested honestly, a root cause with evidence and a target state that is measurable. Actions must be entered in the register with owners and dates and the crew must have been involved.
